Last minute booking, late April in Rome

We're visiting Italy for ten days in middle-late April, beginning and ending in Rome with Naples/Amalfi Coast in the middle. We're currently thinking that we'll spend the last two nights in Rome, but haven't booked those dates yet because we'd like some flexibility in our plans. Wondering what the lodging situation will be like that time of year - should we be able to find something nice in city center on just a day or two notice? We're starting the trip with a few nights in Trastevere and probably want to stay in another part of town for the end of the trip. Also would probably look at AirBnB, but have had really mixed experiences with that service so far in terms of communications and expectations.

Bonus question - what are some of your favorite wine bars in Rome? :)

Rome has many hotels, so it makes news when everything gets sold out, like it reportedly did last Easter, and for the canonizations that were held the following week. I'm sure you'd find something, but hard to predict whether it would be in your price range or comfort zone. Most hotel reservations can be cancelled within a certain time frame, so you could book a place that you know has flexible rules and does not request prepayment. If you're flying home from Rome, you probably must have at least one night there, not try to come from Naples on the same day.

As Laura said, you might book something cancellable. Try Booking.com as many of their properties have a cancellation clause as little as three days in advance.

Wine Bars:
- Cul de Sac, just south of Piazza Navona. It has an incredible wine list, but gets very crowded for dinner so best to go late afternoon or early evening. Their salume, cheese and pates are good; their entrees not so much. But the wine list is vast.
- Cavour 313 on Via Cavour.
- Il Goccetto is not far from Campo dei Fiori, but we have not made it there yet. Also hear good things about No.AU.
