Larger rental car with trunk for Dolomites?

Hi all -- I am renting a car to drive around the Dolomites and will be leaving my luggage in the car while doing some day hikes on the days I'm switching hotels. The car will be parked at a pass (e.g. Passo Falzarego, Passo Pordoi) or in a town (e.g., Ortisei, Siusi).

The least expensive rental cars are tiny hatchbacks. Given the risk of theft from rental cars that I keep reading about here and elsewhere, would locals and travelers here recommend renting a larger, more expensive car that has a trunk, so that at least the bags will be out of sight (and hopefully locked in)?

Many hatchback cars have "screens" which cover the items in the back.

I definitely agree with the trunk. I've had those screen covers, and they don't lay down flat unless the luggage perfectly fits and lies flat. Even with camouflage screen there's still no real protection - if you're a career car thief you probably know there's luggage under that camouflage screen. Of course the best thing is to have no valuables in the car when you make stops like that.

Trunk or cargo cover are no guarantee against theft. Park in a guarded lot in Ortisei, or in a very conspicuous location, like in front of a bar for example, but don't leave your car in the woods or in a secluded lot on top of the pass.
