Landing in Rome getting the train to Salerno

Aloha and Buongiorno,
My wife and I land in Rome on March 14th at 1130 am and want to take the Frecci to Salerno. How often do the trains run and how easy is it to get the train ticket when we arrive or should we book it in advance. I know there is a shuttle or train from the airport to Tremini station but how easy is that being our first time travelling to Italy. Thank you for any advice.

Hi Mike,

You can see the options at https://www.trenitalia.com.

Departure: Fiumicino Aeroporto
Arrival: Salerno

Some of the slower options take 5 hours, so don’t go with the cheaper options. As an example, the 1:38pm with connections at Roma Termini is 2 hours 36 minutes.

I ride a lot of trains in Italy and buy my tickets a month or two ahead, except for the day of arrival trains. You don’t know how much buffer time you need at arrival, or if your plane is late. The day-of-arrival is only about 15€ more. The second train you will ride is very nice, and you will have assigned seats. Carry on suitcases go in an overhead shelf, any large suitcases usually go in spots as you enter the train.

You may use their app to purchase your tickets, but I think for your first time and lots of jet lag from your long trip, I would buy it from the walk-up counter.

Take the Leonardo Express from the airport to Rome Termini and then the Freccarosso to Salerno. You can buy your ticket for Salerno at the airport station so you will get the best connection. Given it can take anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours to get you luggage and complete the immigration process it is better to buy your ticket at the station. Have a look at the Trenitalia website for information on trains, there seem to be 3 per hour during the day to Salerno. Make sure you change the language to English. Also note the dates need to be written did/mm/2024 and the 24 hour clock is used…so a train leaving Roma Termini at 2 pm will be leaving at 14.00. Oh, and use Italian spellings for place names.
