Landing in Naples, 4 nights to spend in the area - Sorrento, Amalfi, etc - How would you plan it?

We'll be landing in Naples on 5/24 and plan to explore Naples that afternoon/evening. We'll need to get up to Rome either the night of 5/27 or morning of 5/28, spend 2 days there and then head home 5/30.

We plan to see Capri (we're thinking just for a day trip), Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. We'd also like to see Pompei. My question is how you would structure your 3-4 nights in the Amalfi Coast?

Would it be better to keep the hotel/luggage in Naples and do day excursions or bring the luggage in tow and spend nights down on the coast? It's our first time visiting Italy and I'm hoping for some insight from some more experienced travelers. Thanks!

I consider Pompeii a full day, or at least it and the others are enough that you can't easily combine them into one day. So, on your other full day you might choose between the AC and Capri.

I would head to the coast for sure and do you excursions from there.

Daniel.

My wife and I will be in Sorrento in towards the end of April.
We are planning 1 full day to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum.
1 day to visit the Amalfi coast with a focus on Positano.
And 1 full day to explore Naples.

I think day trips out of Naples would be tough as you would be covering the same territory a few times.
I think Sorrento is a good base to catch most of what you want to see and do.

I hope this helps. It should all be good. Ciao!!

Sorrento is better base
1 day Capri
1 day whichever is more important or Positano or amalfi/ravello
Sorrento is more relaxing from what I heard. Naples would be hectic as home base.
Naples is only better than Sorrento for Paestum which you didn’t mention and Naples itself

We are planning 1 full day to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The only good news is in April you will not have the summer heat to contend with, for this is a very ambitious plan.

A bowl of ice cream is a treat; eating a gallon at one sitting may be 'too much of a good thing'

Don’t think I’d want to explore Naples in a jet lagged state and not as my first time in Italy either

Go right to Sorrento, spend 3 nights
Day trip to Capri
Day trip Amalfi etc, hard to fit all 3 towns in one day but it is doable I guess

1 more night in Sorrento would be nice if you can swing it

Then go to Naples, visit Pompeii on the way
Spend evening/night in Naples
Rome on 5/28 am

Mondo Guides www.sharedtours.com
Offers a affordable day trip to the 3 towns with a bit of time in each
Transportation by yourself can be a pain ( buses full, etc)
On a group tour that worry is removed

The Circumvesuviana train departs from the Napoli Centrale station located downstairs and is known as Napoli Garibaldi that takes 1h 15m to get to Sorrento which is the end of line. In my opinion the Amalfi Coast is the real highlight when comparing it to Pompeii, Capri and Sorrento. When you arrive in Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana the Amalfi Coast bus stop is across the street.
Take the bus to Amalfi town and wear motion sickness bracelets on both wrists as you go up and down this windy road. Nausea sets in just before arriving in Amalfi and is where the view is best. If I did this again, I would ask my physician for a prescription to prevent motion sickness.
You want to travel along the Amalfi Coast Road west to east so sit on the right side of the bus when facing the driver. If you get on and all the seats are taken on the right get off and wait for the next bus. When you arrive in Amalfi check to see if there’s a direct ferry to Naples. Keep in mind that the bus that travels east to west from Amalfi / Positano is inland so you will not see the coast if working your way back to Naples by bus.

I agree with others that Sorrento is a good base for travel around this area. I am going to the area this summer and we plan on combining Amalfi and Ravello together in a day because they are close
Have a wonderful trip!
