Lamezia closed connection in Rome

I purchased my MYC to Rome ticket months ago. Since then, we decided to take a deture and end trip in Calabria. I called and they would have to cancel all of my flights in order to accommodate a new reservation with a connection. Because I did not want to pay the new price, I purchased a round trip from Rome to Lamazia. My flight back to Rome is at 10am which leaves me in Rome airport Terminal 1 at 12:10. My departing flight from Rome to NYC is at 2:50 from terminal 3. Which leaves me 2 hours and 40 minutes to get my luggage from baggage claim and check into our NYC -- since this is not a connection flight but a two ticket connection. Would I have to go through customs during my arrival in Rome? Is this enough time?

I'm not entirely clear on your questions. You've provided the times for your return flight from Lamezia-Terme to Rome to connect with your flight back to NYC, but unless I'm missing something you haven't indicated what time your inbound flight from NYC arrives in Rome. As that's your first entry to the Schengen area, you will have to go through Passport control when you arrive at FCO. Since you're operating on two tickets, you'll also have to collect your luggage and re-check if for the flight to Lamezia.

Hi Ken --
My question could have been a bit more clear. I'm arriving in rome and staying a few days -- then going to Lamezia. My concern is my flight back. I have two ticket connection from Lamazie to Rome landing in Terminal 1 and then another flight back to the US departing from Terminal 3 with 2hours and 40 minutes in between. I know I have to collect my luggage and recheck them as well as myself at another terminal, my questions are:
Do I have to go through customs and passport control, landing in Rome from Lamezia
Is 2 hours 40 minutes sufficient time to do all the above?
Thanks so much!

You arrival in Rome, from another airport in Italy, triggers no official scrutiny. Its like a domestic US flight.

The issue is the arrival being on time to give you time to retrieve baggage , recheck it, go through security and passport control and change terminals.

As long as your inbound flight to Rome arrives on time you should be OK. That is what will be the key factor.

Me, being me, I would have given myself a bit more time for the transfer in Rome

Keep in mind that the check-in counter will close at 2.05 so you really have only an hour and 55 minutes from your arrival. It is tight. You have no room for error or delay. You will go through exit immigration in Rome.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I was unaware of the check in counters closing at that time -- thank you for that information.
