We plan on taking the train from Varenna to Monterosso on a Tuesday in mid September. Has anyone done this? Advice? Thanks so much.
Mary, As mentioned in the previous reply, take the Regionale from Varenna-Esino to Milano Centrale (time 1H:03M - DON'T forget to validate your ticket!). At Milano Centrale, you'll transfer to another train to Monterosso. I'd suggest using a direct train (no changes), and there are a number of departures every day (other trains have two or three changes). There are direct departures at 07:25, 08:10, 12:10 and 14:05 (among others). Travel time will about 3 hours. My preference would be the 12:10 departure, as that provides a bit more of a "leisurely" travel day and still gets you to Monterosso at a decent hour. Fares for Super Economy from Milan to Monterosso are currently €9 but those will likely sell-out quickly. Base is only €26 which still isn't bad. That will likely be an Inter-City train, so reservations will be compulsory. Happy travels!
Train Varenna to Milano Centrale. From Milano Centrale take train to Genova. In Genoa take train direction La Spezia. Get off at Monterosso or whichever town you wish. Some travel solutions to Monterosso do not require changing trains in Genoa. www.trenitalia.com
