Just to give you some other options on where to stay, look at Malcesine and Salò on Lake Garda, and Bellagio on Lake Como. You have more dining options in Bellagio. We keep going back there.
The lakes are all beautiful. Lake Maggiore is very near Milan MXP is you are flying out of there. Look at Ranco on SÉ coast of the lake before or after a flight.

Forgot to mention we are traveling solely by train (or bus), so will be exploring mostly the southern region of Lake Garda, this is the middle of our trip, we fly into London and out of Basel 😁 I do want to see if we can make it to Malcesine!

The southern part of Lake Garda isn't the prettiest part, in my opinion (because it is still in the lowlands), so despite the fact that you'll need to take the bus, I would definitely look into staying further north. Salò is very pleasant in that regard; not been to Malcesina but it looks great as well.
