We are planning an 8 night trip to the Lakes area in July. We will spend one night in Milan and then are open to whatever.
We would like to spend 3 nights in 2 different areas that we could do day trips or hikes or other experiences (cooking class, boat ride, etc..) from.
Any opinions on the best towns to stay in?
Any hotel suggestions? We are traveling without our kids and this is a milestone birthday trip so we are up for something nice.
Experience suggestions-cooking classes? Boat tour companies?

Unless your flight to Milan gets in late, I'd head to your first location immediately. Use this day which is when you're generally in a bit of a haze
To reach a destination.
Stresa on Lake Maggiore would be your closest.
Followed by Varenna on Lake Como then Peschiera del Garda on Lake Garda.
On your day before your flight home head to Milan for a day, giving you an easy trip to MXP the next day.
