Fly in and out of Milan so you can take a train from the airport to Milan’s central station and then a direct train to Varenna (1h 15m).

Lake Maggiore has the Borromean Island and some very spiffy views.

What exactly did you mean by the Northern Lake Region? Did you include Garda?

How much time there and will you be in a car or on a train? Where will you be coming from and where will you go afterwards?

This year or next? Is this your first trip to Italy, or northern Italy?

Sorry for all the questions - they will help get you customised answers...

Sorry I wasn’t more specific . We will be ending a Rick Steves tour ending in Nice September of 2022. We need to work our way over to Italy and we are researching which lakes we would like to visit, maybe 3 of them for 3-4 days each. We do not want to drive, would love to do it by train if possible. We have been to Italy, took a tour a few years back ending in Lake Orta, loved it but want to see others. From there we would like to take the train into Switzerland. Just looking for suggestions.

Hi Dale, you can take a train from Nice Ville to Stresa on Lake Maggiore that requires a transfer in Milano Centrale (6h 45m). From Stresa you can take a train to Varenna on Lake Como that requires a transfer in Milano Central (3h 15m). Both Stresa and Varenna are perfect home bases to explore the lakes they're located on.
