Lake Orta to Ljubljana

My wife and I have 9 days between RS tour Village Italy and The Best of the Adriatic. It will be from May 3 to May 12. We want to spend some time in Milan but would like advice on where else to go in Northern Italy. The Italy tour starts in Padua so we don't need to go there. We have also been to Lake Como, Venice and the cave region of Slovenia. I was hoping to go to the Dolomites but read on this forum that it is rainy and many places are not open in May. In one of RS podcasts he talks about the Friuli Venezia Guilia region. Any advice would be appreciated

Who is so prescient that they know it will be rainy in the Dolomites in May? And if it is rainy in the Dolomites, why would it not be rainy in Friuli Venezia Giulia at the same time?

The weather may be variable, but our tours do go to the Dolomites in May. The archeology museum at Bolzano is excellent regardless of weather.

Also consider Bergamo (the hill town within the larger city), Brescia (interesting city center for varied architecture), and Vicenza (if you like neoclassical architecture, but I think the theater is the coolest part). Have you also been to Verona? All of these are served by train.
