I am going to be traveling to Italy in the Fall. I will be seeing many villages throughout the Tuscany region and will end in Lake Orta. I am curious if any of you are familiar with Lake Orta. The region looks beautiful and I am wondering if it would be better to stay in this region for a few days instead of trying to make my way up to Lake Como. It will be at the end of my trip and I am thinking I will be tired and the trek to Lake Como looks like it will take some effort. Lake Orta looks like it may have as much beauty as Lake Como. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Lake Orta is very beautiful but something of a challenge without a car - and with a car the traffic getting there can be congested. The town of Orta St. Giulio is like going back in time - real old fashioned pensiones surrounding the town square on the water. It doesn't attract many English speakers so you'll find menus in three languages: Italian, German and French. If you have a car, a drive around the lake is wonderful, culminating in the church high above the water on the other side.
I'm still upset that RS includes it on one of his tours and pray he never puts it in his books.
