I'm planning to visit Lake Maggiore & I'm trying to narrow down the itinerary but in looking at pictures, it seems like Lake Orta might be worth a visit as well. I'd need to take a day or two away from L. Maggiore in order to visit L. Orta; is it worth while? Has anyone visited Lake Orta & if so, can you give me your impressions? How long should I devote to visiting Lake Orta? Is it hard to get to from Lake Maggiore without a car? (We may have a rental car but I haven't decided yet). Would it be an easy day trip from L. Maggiore or should I overnight there? We will be en route to the CT.

We've been to Lake Como too and loved it. We've mainly seen Lake Maggiore from the Swiss shore in Ascona. Lake Orta will be new to us. We are really looking forward to 3 relaxing weeks around some new territory. I'll send you a PM when we get back in August.

When are you going? We are going to be in this area for about 3 weeks later next month and I can let you know more specifically. We are staying in a house near Lake Maggiore and will have a car so we are planning to take some day trips to L. Orta but are flexible that we can stay over night or go back for another day trip if it is scenic enough.

The last night of our RS village Italy trip was spent in Lake Orta. I would not visit Lake Orta as their is not much to see other than a small church on an island. I much preferred seeing Lake Como and Lugano.

Byron, I have visited Lake Como & loved it (I specifically loved Varenna) & I'm looking to duplicate that experience. I can't decide if I'll enjoy L. Maggiore or L. Orta as much as L. Como & I'm really thinking about scratching a lake visit altogether since I'm not sure whether I'll enjoy any of the lakes as much as Lake Como. I'm trying to decide if the 3-4 days that I was going to devote to visiting Lake Maggiore &/or Orta would be better spent elsewhere. Thanks for your feedback.
