My daughter and I will be doing Cosmos Italy's Best tour this year. The only thing on our bucket list not on the tour is seeing the mountains. We have a day at Lake Maggiore, which I understand we will see so some of the Alps. My question is, is that a good view of the mountains, or should we try to squeeze in a day trip to the Dolomites while we are in Venice?
There are mountains around Lake Maggiore, although you need to venture north of Bellinzona (CH) or near Domodossola to see the real tallest Alps (the mountains around the lakes are called Prealpi, which means 'before the Alps'. On the west side of the northern Lake Maggiore you have the Lepontine Alps.
If you live in the flat prairies of the Midwest, I'm sure even the Prealpi will impress you (they are about 6000ft+ high). If you live in Rockies in Colorado or near the Sierra Nevada in California or the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest maybe not so much.
A day trip from Venice takes away time from Venice, and a day trip is not really a lot of time to venture too far.
