Lake Maggiore

Hello!

We are flying into Milan's MXP the first week of July and decided we wanted to wear off our jet lag at a laketown rather than the city. We will be renting a car with kids ages 4 and 9. Most people had recommended Lake Maggiore as the closest lake and Stresa as the closest city.
Stresa tho looks like it might be a little too crowded for our taste so I was looking into Cannero Rivera as they have a very nice hotel on the water there within our budget. Would this be a significantly longer distance to get to? Don't want to have to drive too long after an intercontinental flight. Others had suggested Laveno and there is a lovely agriturismo west of Arona between Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore but seems ferry access and such would be a bit of a pain from there.

Also, our next stop will be the Ligurian coast - heading towards Portofino - so want to make sure staying that far north won't add too much time driving on the other end, either. Thank you!

Several years ago we stayed in Baveno. It's smaller and quieter than Stresa, but just a few minutes away. We rented one of the apartments owned by our hotel (Rivoli), which might be ideal with children.

Cannero Riviera is about 40 min drive up the lake from Stresa. But coming from Malpensa, you'd stay on the freeway and exit at Verbania. It's probably an extra 30 min coming from the airport.

Stresa crowded? It's not. It's a small town of 4000 people and it's very convenient to visit the islands. But it's up to you.

We stayed at a hotel in Baveno that was on the lake side and all balconies overlooked the lake. Carillon is the name. Also Hotel Eden is a good hotel in Baveno....across from the boat dock.

Stresa and Lago Maggiore is perfect for a jet lag day!

We did this a year ago on our way back to MXP in May 2016 and it was lovely. Highly recommend a day trip to the islands in the lake too. INCREDIBLE gardens and villas. We stayed in a beautiful rustic Airbnb cabin 5 minutes up in the mountains from Stresa which we loved. If I went back for a next trip, I think I'd stay on one of the islands in the lake.

One of our favorite restaurants from our 17 day Tuscany trip was there too. (We finished lunch and promptly made a dinner reservation for the very next day.) If you decide to go, message me and I'll look up the restaurant name for you, the Airbnb, or the apartments reccommended to me on the island.

And if you decide NOT to drive up to Lago Maggiore, I also can recommend a GREAT Airbnb apartment 5 minutes from MXP in a cute little suburb for $78 per night (two bedrooms):

We spent our last night here before flying home. It was clean and adorable and I can't believe it was under $100.
