Lake Maggiore

We are looking at spending two nights in early June in either Stresa or Arona. Suggestions as to which might be preferable. We hope to do the train/boat trip to Locarno and it appears you can make the trip from both towns.

I'm more familiar with Stresa, which I like very much and strongly recommend. Also very close to the Borromee islands.
However if you intend to stay there right before flying back home from Malpensa and you need to get to the airport in the early AM, Arona is closer to the airport. If you don' t need to be very close to the Malpensa airport for an early flight, I'd stay in Stresa (which is only 40-45 min from the airport anyway, so not too far either).

I also really like Stresa, and would certainly recommend it. Depending on which hotel you use, you should be within walking distance to the docks for the boats to the Borromeo Islands. You could also take the Cable Car up the mountain for some incredible views.

Just noted you are staying two nights (1 full day) only. If you can increase it to at least 3 (or even 4) it would be great.
Visiting the 3 Borromeo islands (isola Bella, isola dei Pescatori, isola Madre) will take you most of a day.
Locarno is not close, so that trip is a whole day trip too. And if you go up there you certainly want to see Cannobio as well. There is also the scenic Centovalli railroad from Locarno to Domodossola to consider.
In addition since you are at it, you also need to visit the beautiful town of Orta San Giulio on Lake Orta (just 20 min away from Stresa, at least by car).
There is a lot to do and see on lake Maggiore, don't short change yourself. I think 3 nights is the absolute minimum.
