I am looking into a casual hop on hop off train trip from Lake Garda to Florence and back. I would like to see some sights, maybe both coastlines? Any suggestions on where we should go within this area?

Italian train tickets don't typically allow hop-on/hop-off privileges. Plan to buy a separate ticket to each new destination, which is easy enough to do at machines or ticket windows in train stations.
Either coastline is a significant detour from the main, central rail line. How much time do you have to spend? Will you be reserving hotels, etc?
Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it. Trenitalia.com will present the same schedules in a different way, and also sells tickets if there's a leg you're ready to commit to in advance.
