We arrive in Milan on Monday, may 23, wheere we plan to stay for a night before moving on, for about 3 nights, to...? We are considering Lake Garda,, where it's been suggested we stay in Desenzando del Garda. I've just posts that Bolzano is a great place. We would rather not have a car, so is there any advice on which town to choose? And can we manage here without a car --ie, with public transportaiton-- if we want to explore the area a bit ? Thanks so much!

When planning our trip to Italy this summer (sans car), I had similar question and ultimately decided Bolzano. Because we prefer the drama of the mountains, hikingso Bolzano was ultimately a no brainer (but I wish we had more time so we could explore the lakes region). Another factor is time of year. The Dolomite region is sleepy until the hiking season kicks off in June (mid to end). Bolzano is easy to get to by train (ave. travel time around 4 hours). From there you can take cable cars, buses to other regions of the dolomites for day hikes, to see Castlerotto, Alpe di Suise. The only question to ask: are these modes of transit all running in May. I think either way you will see a lovely part of Italia!
