Lake Garda/Lago di garda...hotel recs?

Thinking of staying 1-2 nights at one of my favorite places, Lago di garda. Always used to visit w/ Italian friends so was wondering if it's easy enough to take public transit (bus from Verona or train/bus to Denz/Peschiera) and then taxis/ferry if need be around the area of Sirmione-Lazise. Any lovely hotel recs that you have? I've always adored Lazise but think it's too far from transit so am now thinking more Sirmione. Peschiera maybe is too close to Gardaland, thus, large families, etc. Thanks for your help!!!

Linda,

I was in Peschiera for several days in September and didn't find it overwhelmed with Gardaland crowds at all. I was in a hotel close to the station and it didn't seem overly busy at all. I was glad that I stayed there and quite enjoyed the scenery there, with the beautiful canals and walls of the old fort.

Sirmione is not a good choice if you're planning on doing a lot of touring in the area, as it's not as well served for transportation. Both Peschiera and Desenzano del Garda have rail stations, Sirmione does not. Also, Peschiera is one of the best places to access the boats for trips up the lake, as their "home base" appears to be right there. If you stay close to the station in Peschiera, there are usually Taxi's there and I believe Buses go past there regularly as well.

For hotels in Peschiera, you might have a look at Enjoy Garda as it's in a good location and gets excellent ratings. If you want something a bit more basic (but still clean and comfortable), have a look at Hotel Garden, which is right AT the rail station.

Buon Viaggio!

Linda, a few months ago I took a day trip from Verona to the southern end of Lago di Garda. There was a direct bus from Verona, with a stop right at Sirmione. Took just about one hour. I will say that once I was at the bus stop, it was a little hard to figure out just which bus to take. Various buses came by and stopped, but none said Sirmione or Lago di Garda on the front. Be sure to get clear instructions regarding the number or name to look for on the front of the bus.
