Lake Garda Hydrofoils and ferries

We are staying in Bardolino on Lake Garda and want to take a trip around the lake. We understand it is a very long 100 mile drive and to be very careful in the tunnels... We also understand it is best to go CLOCKWISE to be closer to the lake for photos. We also understand traffic around Garda Land (just south of where we will be staying can be brutal. So, is there a way we can take a ferry or Hydrofoil across the lake to the west side From the Bardolino area and cut out some of the driving... We have been to the Garda Ferry site..it is somewhat confusing and does not really supply the details we need. We would need to be able to put the car on the ferry or Hydrofoil...and get off on the west side or northwest side...and then proceed clockwise back to Bardolino. What do your suggest. BTW --we have all of Rick's DVDs and his books.

Hi Chris-there is no car ferry service at Bardolino. If you look at this page: http://www.navlaghi.it/eng/g_orari.asp You will see the notation that car ferries only serve the stops with an asterisk, also designated as Traghetti. Those would be Limone, Malcescine, Maderno, and Torri. If you look at the actual timetables below, you will see that one boat operates between Malcescine and limone, goine east west across the lake, and another operates between Maderno and Torri. If you want to drive partway around and avoid Gardaland, I suggest you drive north to malcescine and cross to Limone, then drive back around the north end of the lake, via Riva. Use the timetable for the Malcescine to Limone Ferry (or Traghetto). It apparently does not start running until June 1 (no spring timetable).
