Lake Garda for a day

Hello, We are going to lake Garda for a day from Verona Italy. Was wondering the best way of getting there from Verona using public transportation. Anyone recommend what towns to go to or what to do? Also, I do not speak much Italian...is it easy to get around in English? Any information or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

You can easily get a bus to Sirmione from either the train station or in front of what I think I remember as the Green Bar on the main street (the Tourist Info Center can tell you). Sirmione is on a peninsula at the foot of the lake; it has a castle and a wonderful ruined Roman villa, plus very nice views. The bus trip is normally less than an hour, although when we went there was an accident ahead and we were massively delayed. The trains go to other towns at the foot of the lake. You really don't have time in a day trip to get further north.

One of our favorite days of our June 2011 trip. We day tripped from Verona using the train. I believe we got off at Desenzano. Then we took the fun ferry to Sirmione. You will need to have the train and ferry schedule to plan your return. Absolutely loved it including the ruins, dipping our feet in the water and buying a deli sandwich and eating it on a bench with a fantastic view. It was funny as we asked the hotel concierge how to visit and he was useless then when talking to the girl managing the breakfst room we got perfect information and encouragement. After the ferry back we sat at a cafe by the pier and had an aperitif of spritz with complementary munchies while people watching. It was a perfect day and if we had had another extra day we would have returned the next.
