So, I have been a big RS fan for years and always purchase and use his guidebook. During a 5 week trip this fall, we are planning 18 days in Northern Italy including the Dolomites, Lake Garda, Lake Como en ding with 3 days in Milan before flying home. We have visited Como and Maggiori several years ago but thought this time we would include Garda and staying on Garda Town. Rick doesn't include information on Garda. Been reading online and wondered if anyone has been and could share any experiences.
We spent several days on Lake Garda while heading to and from the Dolomites. We drove up the west side and returned down the east side seeing the different towns on both sides of the lake.
We stayed in two different towns. We stayed in Salò on the SW side of the lake, a recommendation from Italian friends. This is a lovely town filled with toney shops and a marina on the lakefront. I think we were the only Americans there. It was filled with Italians, Germans and other Europeans. After we left the Dolomites, we returned south to Lake Garda and stayed in Malcesine. It has nice mountain views but seemed more touristy. We liked the location of our hotel, Il Castello, right on the water with its own beach.
Each of the Italian lakes is very different from the others, and all are worth a visit!
