I will be staying in Desenzano in May of 2014. On Saturday, May 3 I would like to travel to Riva del Garda to explore the upper lake region. It looks like my fastest option for getting there is Bus LN027 from Desenzano to Riva. Then I would like to purchase an upper lake pass to see some of Limone and Malcesine also. I'm having difficulty trying to determine how to get back to my b&b later that evening. It looks like the last ferry to leave Malcesine for Desenzano in May is around 3 o' clock in the afternoon. 3 o' clock doesn't give me much time to explore the upper lake. Will they be adding more boats that time of year, or does anyone have another option for me to get back to my b&b?
Thank you once again for your help! Gerri
Take the LN027 bus from Desenzano to Limone or Riva on the Brescia province shore. Use the boats to connect between Riva and Limone (either direction you wish) and also for Malcesine (from Riva or also from Limone), just to say you've been on a boat. I've also seen plenty of tourist boat excursions that take you back and forth from Limone to Malcesine and back. I've also seen plenty that take you all around the lake (I've been in the area many times and last time I was there last summer). So you will have plenty of opportunities to experience the lake on a boat, not necessarily with the official public transportation.
Limone and Malcesine are my favorite towns (especially Limone). Riva is pretty too, but it's a bigger place. I like Torbole too, since you are up there on the North lake.
Plan Malcesine as your last town of your visit. From Malcesine you will then take the ATV bus #162 back down to Peschiera (ATV is the Verona bus company).
The last one departs at 7:35pm and gets you to Peschiera at 8:47pm, but check the timetable to make sure when they publish the summer schedule. Once you reach Peschiera, hop on a train going to Desenzano, there is a couple of trains every hour until well past 9pm. There are also buses that connect from Peschiera to Desenzano, but they don't operate as late as the trains.
you could also go back to Desenzano with the LN027 bus from either Riva or Limone, however the last one is just after 5pm, therefore coming back from the Verona province side of the lake will afford you a longer stay.
Dear Roberto,
Thank you so much for your advice! Gerri
