Visiting family near Lake Garda in May but looking for ideas for a week of travel on our own - best way to get around car vs train ?

It depends on where you want to visit. If you plan to visit the nearby Dolomites Mountains, or the Valpolicella wine area, the car is more efficient. If you visit the cities nearby (Verona, Vicenza, Mantua, Padua, etc.) then you don’t need a car.

On Lake Garda last summer I visited Sirmione, Desenzano del Garda, Salo, Vittoriale degli Italiani, Riva del Garda and Malcesine. I really enjoyed all of them, though I would say Riva del Garda was the best IMO, especially if you had a car and could drive around the area just north of town. The views from the Castello di Arco were unbelievable and so worth the hike up the mountain. Another tourist favorite is to take the cable car up to the top of Monte Baldo. I didn't try to do that when I was there because it wasn't quite clear enough on the top of the mountains, but you might consider it. If you have time to get to Verona, it is definitely worth your time. That's also where I rented my car.
