I have spent time on Lake Maggiore and Lake Como and would love to spend some time on this trip on Lake Garda. I will be staying in Desenzano and will not have a car. Is it possible to visit the northern portion of the lake using the ferry system? Even if I have to take several day trips to enjoy it, that's fine. How many days do you think I should allow for Lake Garda on my itinerary?

There is service via boat to the various towns. Personally I like Sirmione in the South and in the north Limone, Malcesine andRiva are my favourites.
Last time I visited the area Was the day before yesterday in fact.
