Taking grandchildren to Lake Garda in 2011 - every hotel touts their closeness to a beach, but having been there, lots of them aren't beaches where kids can swim, ie, sandy, accessible, etc. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Take a look at Hotel Castello in Malcescine. We didn't stay there, but every time we walked past, I wished we had. It is right on a sandy beach, and highly recommended on Tripadvisor as family-friendly. You could e-mail them and ask about the beach suitability for small children and swimming.
