Planning a family vacation in the Lake District and using the ferry system to get around. I can’t find any information on carrying luggage on the ferries. Weight restrictions and cost. Does anyone have any information? I have looked at the ferry web page but I can’t find anything about luggage. Thank you.
Month of year?
We were in Italy last month and used the ferries on Lago di Gardaand Lago Maggiore to travel around, sometimes with luggage. I found a post in the TripAdvisor forums that had the luggage rules:
Complete discussion here:
Basically, they are concerned with very large items like bicycles that take up a lot of space and might block passageways. The 0.6 meter length is roughly 24 inches, so standard carry-on size roller bags do not incur a fee. No one even looked at our bags as we rolled them on board.
Note that there is no luggage storage area, so you must keep the bags with you at your seat, and take care that they do not interfere with movement around the boat.
August 2025
When I took ferries between Varenna and Bellagio last week (mid October), I saw plenty of people with various size luggage. I didn't see anyone checking size or weight or number of bags. However, he FAQ section of the ferry website indicates that there may be some restrictions in crowded periods.
I tried to insert the link to the appropriate FAQ on luggage but it didn't work so I'm pasting in what it says:
Yes, it is generally possible to carry luggage on Lake Como ferries. However, there may be some restrictions or additional charges depending on the type of service you use. Here are some things to keep in mind.
Size and type of luggage
Most Lake Como ferries offer room for standard-sized luggage, such as backpacks, suitcases and bags. However, items that are too large or bulky may be restricted.
Crowded periods
During peak tourist seasons, ferries can be crowded and luggage space may be limited. It is good to take this into account and plan accordingly.
Specific ferry policies
Before boarding, check the policies on the ferry company's official website (search "Embarking baggage" in this document).
Thank you for your information! It is helpful. We are traveling in August so luggage space might be tight.
