Lake Comp then Tuscany then where?

We have 11 days on the ground
Spending 3 nts in Varenna, then 5 nights in greve in an agritourism. We planned to go from there to Be nice and then back to Milan for our evening flight home. I am now having second thoughts about Venice and wonder about a different destination after Tuscany? I am worried Venice will not Be the romantic beautiful place I envision and it will be mobbed with tourists, etc. We are not big "city" people and I worry about that too. Anyways, thoughts on other possible 3rd destinations? Thanks!

Liney you can have several options after Tuscany for destination #3:

You can opt to go to the Cinque Terre if you are worrying about Venice being over crowded before heading to Milan. It's very romantic there with great views. Choose either Monterosso or Vernazza as a base to stay.

Lake Maggiore is one hour away from Milan. Take the train to the beautiful town of Stresa and go from there.

Go to Switzerland! In 1 hour from Milan, you are in the pretty lakeside town of Lugano.

In just over an hour from Milan, you’re in the atmospheric university city of Bologna.

Visit the gastronomically and architecturally significant Parma, less than 90 minutes away.

At 90 minutes away from Milan, Turin is wonderful town.

The port city of Genoa is also about 90 minutes away from Milan.

If there's one place that might be even more crowded than Venice, it's CT.

To the OP, when will you be going? Another option is to extend your stay in Greve. It's a great central location and you could do even more day trips, even to places as far away as Cortona or Lucca (but they would make for a long day).

Venice is great and I'd pick it over CT. In the late afternoons and evenings Venice is wonderful. You could spend the day in a close by town like Padua for something completely different.

Maybe from Varenna you could go to Lake Garda but again I think it would be much of the same
I like the idea of heading to Switzerland but really being on Lake Como I think it will be more of the same.

Turin, Bologna and Genoa are out - not really all that much to do there as a tourist (although I would live in either city)

If you’re worried about crowds in Venice, you need to realize that the Cinque Terre will be mobbed. In Venice you can get away from crowds. Or dd more time to Greve or move to another location in Tuscany such as Pienza or go to Umbria , staying in pretty Spello.
