Lake Como: where to stay and how to get there!

Hello! I'll be traveling to Lake Como in September with three other adults. We are arriving in Milan MXP at 8pm and would like to go directly to Lake Como. What would be the best train/bus option to use? We are also considering two different rental homes- one is located just north of Oliveto Lario and the other is in Menaggio. Which would you recommend? We are staying two nights and plan on leisurely exploring the area, possibly water activities if the weather cooperates. Thank you for any advice!

We rented a car and stayed in Menaggio. We did that because the house was close to the ferry that runs around the lake. Worked fine. I liked Menaggio. It is small but comfortable. It is best to take the boat to get anywhere on the lake as it is a lot of driving or training.

Since we're arriving so late at night, will it be a problem arranging for a taxi once we get to Como Train Station? Or from Lecco Train Station? I tried looking up the ferry schedule and I'm not sure when the ferries stop transporting (in Sept) at night.

If you want to get there the same night of your arrival, the only option is probably renting a car at the airport and drive.
The other option is take the train to Como (via Saronno), but then to reach your final destination at that time at night, the only option is a taxi.

I found a train to Asso that I assume is through local trains from S.Giovanni, anyone heard of that? Also, is it unsafe/sketchy to take a cab at that time (approx 11pm, 23:00)?

rachel,

The usual favourite place to stay with many here is the small town of Varenna, which is easily reachable by train from Milan (about one hour from Milano Centrale).

Given your late arrival time, you won't be able to get to Varenna that night, as the last train of the night departs Milano Centrale at 21:20 (not likely you'll be able to connect with that). My suggestion - spend one night in Milan and then continue to Varenna the next morning after a good rest and a hearty breakfast. There are hotels within a five minute walk from Milano Centrale, but be sure to tell them that you'll be a "late arrival".

When you board the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale and the Regionale train to Varenna, BE SURE to validate your tickets or you'll risk hefty fines!

The line is MILANO CADORNA - CANZO/ASSO.
From Malpensa you would connect to that at either Milano Bovisa or at Milano Cadorna, both served by the Malpensa Express. At that time at night the service is operated by bus from Seveso and further. The problem is once in Canzo will you find a taxi at night?
Only 2 reasonable options here: either go to the lake the following day or drive there the same night on a rental car. Tertium non datur.
