Lake Como vs. the Dolomites

Hello. I was just wondering if anyone has a preference for Lake Como vs. the Dolomites. We are considering visiting one or the other for a day or two in mid- to late-May. Would love any suggestions as to whether one is better than the other in terms of seeing lots of natural beauty. And, if anyone has been to either place in May, how's the weather?! Thanks!

Now, I have not been to either, but I was contemplating the same choice for the same time of year. My conclusion was that a May trip to the Dolomites could possibly be the wrong time of year. The Alpe di Siusi look to be delightful, but the high altitude and cooler temperatures required bringing extra, warmer clothes. Also, the lifts that take you to even higher elevations don't operate until June, and it would be too early for wild flowers. As I said, I have not been, but tI thought these factors important to consider. Okay, now over to those who know better.

I've been to Lake Como that time of year (2003) and it was beautiful. Never been to the Dolomites but going this May :)

I worry that May would be too early for the Dolomites, so I would go to Lake Como. I visited in May 2008 and the weather was perfect (not too hot), gardens were beautiful, and most importantly the huge summer crowds hadn't hit yet.

Thanks Robert, Nancy & Christine! The colder weather in the Dolomites (thus having to pack extra clothes) in May is a bit of a deterrent. I'm glad to hear you've been to Lake Como in May though, and it was nice! I think we're leaning that direction anyway to make our itinerary a little easier. Nancy & Christine: Since you've been to Lake Como, do you have any suggestions for first-time visitors? Lodging, especially. Thanks again!!!!

I have a lodging suggestion for Lake Como, specifically in Varenna. We stayed at Albergo Milano in Sept '09 & loved it. We had a lakefront room with a balcony & the view was incredible. The hotel was nice as well & we were very pleased with our experience. Varenna is a quaint & picturesque little town with a nice promenade on the lakefront. It was very relaxing. Have a great time in Lake Como.

We stayed at the Orange House in Varenna. It was less expensive than the other lodging we saw in the area and was perfectly nice. We primarily just use our lodging as a clean place to sleep, so it worked out great. Breakfast was included. If you are looking for an activity while you are there, I highly recommend the cooking class at Il Caminetto. It was one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in Italy. Reservations in advance are recommended.
