Lake Como vs Bologna from Milan: Which for Full Day vs. Half Day?

My family (US) is heading to Europe in late May/early June, and we’ll be finishing our trip in Milan. We arrive on a Tuesday around lunchtime and plan to spend the rest of that day exploring the city while doing day trips on Wednesday and Thursday.

For day trips, we have Wednesday completely open, and on Thursday we have tickets to see The Last Supper at 5:00 PM. Since both destinations we’re considering are about an hour away by train, we’d likely need to leave by around 2:00 PM on Thursday. That would give us roughly 5 hours at our destination if we arrive around 9:00 AM.

We’re deciding between Lake Como and Bologna for these two day trips. Lake Como has been on our itinerary from the beginning, and we were thinking of visiting a few towns and getting around by ferry. Recently, though, Bologna has really caught our interest, especially for the food and possibly walking the portico up to Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca.

We’re struggling with how to split our time, which destination deserves the full day, and which makes more sense for a shorter visit? We were initially leaning toward giving Bologna the full day, but many food tours seem to run until around 2:00 PM, which feels a bit tight for catching a train back (also curious, are those food tours worth it, especially if we only have a half day, or would we be better off exploring on our own?).

On the other hand, I’d hate to feel like we only got a quick glimpse of Lake Como if we only spent a few hours there.

Has anyone here done both as day trips from Milan? How would you divide the time

Honestly I would choose just one and do that on Wednesday
5 hours is not enough for either location

Milan has plenty to fill your time on Thursday before the Last Supper
Visit the Duomo and roof, Galleria, Opera house, fashion district, Monumental Cemetery, Brera district, canal district, Sforza Castle, various museums ….

I would probably choose Bologna and there is no need to do a food tour-just explore on your own

If you want visit Como and take the ferry for some rides, it will take up a whole day. You can go to Bologna, look around the central area, have lunch and get back to Milan in time for the Last Supper appointment.

PS. You don't say your family size and make up. A Bologna day trip will cost a lot more for train tickets. Train tickets from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago are only 5.20 EUR per person each way, and Como Lago is a short walk to the ferry dock. Trains are twice per hour are always the same price.

I would give Lake Como the full day because you’re dealing with ferries, and they can have long lines.

hey hey rainbowrocket
i'm sure aware of traveling during high high season and the HEAT. it will be very crowded as other there now have posted about the crowds ans made comment like this, they can't imagine what main towns/cities will be like. not wanting to be deloris downer but do be prepared, long lines, restaurants packed and reservations needed.
either lake como or bologna will be full day trips, trains crowded with many thousands wanting to see and do what you're planning. buy R/T tickets so no waiting at train station to wait to buy. you could do a search for lake como top of page with magnifying glass, click travel forum, 6 months or less. if not there first thing morning at ferry station, lines very long by 10am. know what ticket to buy and available same day. many private van/buses/train/car tours every day. my friends are going to lake como wedding in june for her nephew. her & husband totally shocked/stunned how expensive/how crowded to play tourists. don't know what part of lake and she's hoping bride & groom & her sister have it together and planned. her first trip overseas and italy, i told her she nuts/crazy to go at that time but have a bottle of wine at table and people watch.
enjoy milan, lots to see & do, fashionista place besides paris, eat milanese risotto, coffee, chocolate maybe a tour, osso buco.
timeout.com how to eat like a local in milan, must try dishes. known as rice "risotto" capital of italy
no matter what have a great & fun time, enjoy
aloha

Congrats on snagging Last Supper tickets. We managed to get 11:45 on a Sunday in July. Keep in mind they ask you to arrive 30 minutes early. Factor in getting from the train station to the museum, plus all the other logistics of a day trip that day, I would limit your day trip to just one day (in your case, Wednesday).

If it were me, I'd choose Lake Como, but I've heard the lines for ferries can get pretty long. If you're intent on visiting an Italian lake from Milan with a little less stress, Lake Maggiore might be more doable. You could take the train to Arona (same time it takes to get to Como) take the ferry to the Borromean Islands, then train back from Stresa. Would be a full day.

I have experienced the crowding and ferry lines around Lake Como, as reported above, (Our last visit was May, 2025.).The regional trains are erratic, so a schedule is somewhat of a suggestion. The trains have also been SRO in my experience.
There are long lines to buy ferry tickets, and long lines to board the ferries, unless you start early. You cannot buy ferry tickets in advance. The ferry ticket office opens around 7:30am. By 10:00am, there are lines to buy tickets. The ferry schedule is also erratic, and as the day goes on, it takes longer to board and unload the crowded ferries.
If your heart is set on seeing Lake Como, get there early, tour around the lake on the ferries, and return to Varenna no later than 2:00pm. You then have the erratic regional trains to deal with. Regional trains have no reserved seats, and first class is a joke.
We have been to Lake Como several times, but I think we are done.
Sadly, the influencers have ruined this beautiful area.

Had exactly the same route last year

Day 1 - Milan to Como and it was great. So, I would suggest Como if you prefer nature and water and landscapes

Day 2 - Milan-Bologna and back to Milano. The train took like 3 hours to Bologna and 3h back. It's a nice city, but if you've been to old Europe and other Italy cities you won't be that much impressed. It's cool as it is and that's all.

I would still suggest Como.

You say you are ending your trip in Milan, arriving on Tuesday. Where are you arriving from? If it is feasible, maybe you could go directly to Lake Como, stay there Tuesday night, and then have a full day on Wednesday to enjoy the lake, ride the ferries, etc. Then travel to Milan Wednesday evening or possibly Thursday morning. Alternatively, depending where you are coming from before Milan, you might be able to spend Tuedsay night in Bologna if you prefer it to Lake Como. Although most people on this forum discourage one-night stays, and I usually agree, in this case it might be more relaxed than a day trip with too little time.
