Lake Como-Varenna

My wife and I will be in Milan for four nights in mid-November (after a river cruise to Basel) and she would like to visit Lake Como for a day, or possibly overnight and part of a second day. I keep hearing that Varenna and Bellagio are both like ghost towns in November and we should go elsewhere, or even stay in Milan the whole time. Thought I'd ask the experts here for advice. We have reservations for the Duomo and Last Supper on the 3rd and 4th days. If we try to stay overnight in Varenna, any recommendations for lodging for one night? Thank you.

I have no idea what's open in November, so perhaps use booking.com to research that. Then, research what the ferry schedule is for fall and winter. And, check the regional train schedule ( no reserve seats.)
Varenna is charming, but small, so the larger Bellagio may have more options.
We like hotel Albergo Milano and Hotel du Lac in Varenna, and the view rooms.
You will have shorter days in November.

What Pat said. In the past, we also stayed at and loved Hotel Du Lac but I see it has changed ownership, been refurbished and is now quite expensive.

We visited Lake Como for the peaceful beauty. If the choice is between ghost town and crowded with tourists, I know which one I'd pick. Overnight makes sense.

Hi there, I was there in early March, which I know is different from mid-November, but the towns were still quite busy with day trippers during the weekend. The trains were packed going back to Milan. The idea of checking the ferry schedule is a good one as they will probably follow a sense of how busy the area is (ie, are there many ferries each day or only a couple). Good luck.
