I am looking to travel by train from Milan Central to VARENNA in Lake Como Your book makes that suggestion but I can't find any connections nor to Sondrio Tirano etc I only find to CUMO .

Are you on the trenitalia.com website in English ?
Type in Milano Centrale to Varenna Esino. There is a train every hour.

Where are you looking`? You should be looking on the Trenitalia website (the Italian national railway): http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Make sure you spell station names correctly, and use the Italian spelling. Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino there is one train per hour, and it costs €6.70 per person.
Varenna-Esino to Tirano is also hourly and costs €7.30
These are Regionale trains, no point in buying in advance.
