Lake Como to Venice or Verona

I am visiting lake Como in September and then I want to go to Venice with hopefully a stop in Verona on the way. Maybe one night. Is this best by train or by bus? Also are there long tunnels on the way. Tunnels worry me because I am very claustrophobic. If it is difficult to get to Verona I may bypass that town and just go straight to Venice. I have always wanted to see Verona. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

It is pretty easy to get from Lake Como to Venice and Verona, but it would help to know where on that big lake you are coming from. If you don't like tunnels, better steer clear of Varenna and stick to the city of Como and travel by lake ferry. There is a tunnel between Verona and Venice, but it is a short one. And in a train, you don't actually see the tunnel, it just gets dark for a while.

Jennifer,

Where in Lake Como are you travelling from? I've travelled that route and I don't recall too many tunnels (although my memory is a bit unclear on that).

Verona is definitely worth a stop, especially as it's "on the way" from Lago di Como and Milan. Train is the easiest and quickest travel method, especially since you may be using the fast Freccia trains which travel at up to 300 km/h. When you arrive at Verona Porta Nuova, you can either take a Bus to Piazza Bra or a Taxi to your hotel. Details in the guidebook.

Jennifer,
We traveled this route (in reverse) via train, we actually traveled from Padova to Varenna.
The only tunnel I recall is a short one right before arriving to Varenna (from Milan).

If it is difficult to get to Verona I may bypass that town and just go straight to Venice. I have always wanted to see Verona.

Verona is on the train route from Milan to Venice, so it's an easy stop if you'd like to spend a couple of nights there.

If you have time, you may consider visiting Padua (Padova) from Venice-- an easy 30 minute train ride.

Have a wonderful trip!
