Lake Como to Lake Lugano

My friends and I are starting our Italy tour front Lake Como. We have half a day in Lake Como then start the tour the next day. Is it enough to take a trip to Lake Lugano for half a day? I've heard so much about this place. Thanks everyone for your input.

It sort of depends on where along Lake Como you will be starting from and where you want to go on Lake Lugano. It is at least theoretically possible, because the lakes are not far apart.

ells,

Are you referring to a RS tour that begins in Varenna on Lake Como? If so a day trip to Lugano is certainly possible. The trip will take 2H:04M each way, with one change in Monza. That should allow you to have a fairly complete day to look around Lugano. Be sure to check the return time for your train, and don't forget to validate tickets on Regionale trains.

Last May I did exactly what you are wanting to do. I was staying in Varenna. We took the ferry to Menaggio, then a bus to Lugano. The most complicated part was finding the place to buy the bus ticket in Menaggio. It was a beautiful day and I'm glad I went, but in my opinion Lugano is not nearly as nice as Lake Como. Depending on how much you will be able to see with your tour, you might want to spend your time seeing more of Lake Como. Are you taking the 17 day Best of Italy tour?
