Lake Como to Bolzano by bus???

We will be staying two nights in Varenna on Lake Como and want to know if it is possible to travel by bus through the Dolomites to Bolzano or Castlerotto(where we would like to stay in the region for a few nights). We do not plan to rent a car, and it seems we have to take a long train trip with transfers and a bus to get to Castlerotto. Will this take all day and leave us in Bolzano without time for the bus to Castlerotto? Traveling the week of Sept 20. Thanks for any tips or suggestions for solving this.

Susan, My preference for that particular trip would be a combination of train and Bus. There is (for example) a train departing Varenna at 10:37, arriving in Bolzano at 15:30 (Time 4H:53M, two changes in Milano and Verona, reservations compulsory on one leg, schedule of course subject to change). The Bus to Castelrotto departs at ten and fourty minutes past the hour, so it's not likely you'd be able to get from the rail station to the Bus station in time to catch the 15:40 Bus, but it's only a short wait. If you took the 16:10 Bus, you should be in Castelrotto at 17:00, just in time to check in, explore a bit and have a fine hot meal. While that's still going to be about a six hour journey, taking that trip using only Coach will be slower and will probably still involve changes. Happy travels!
