Stay in Varenna.
I was told this by several travelers here, and I did it.
They were right. The location is perfect. One hour train ride from Milan.
We are staying in Villa Torretta and it's wonderful. Location Location Location.
The town is quaint, but offers all one needs to enjoy a Holliday.
Ferries are prompt and plentiful, taking you to all the other towns on the lake.
I say YES to Varenna

Last year we also stayed in Villa Torretta and it was fabulous. The room and bathrooms were very spacious, clean and quiet. The balcony gave us a beautiful view of the lake. Enjoy!

You can buy a 1 day ferry pass and ride the ferry do different villages around the lake, get off, walk around..... enjoy the village/town. Then hope on another ferry and off you go.
We had a lovely day riding round to several different towns.
We were staying in Varenna.

Yes, so excited to be going to Varenna this summer even if it is for just one night (which I know is not going to be long enough). We are coming from two weeks in Switzerland and heading back to Zurich via Bernina Express route. I am so looking forward to our short stop here.

I agree, Varenna is a great location for touring Lake Como. As it happens, it was one of the stops featured on The Amazing Race last night.

If anyone watches the Amazing Race, last Thursday's show was in Varenna and Milano. They had a challenge at the old castle above town. My wife and I are staying at the Hotel du Lac in June. It was fun to see how beautiful the area is. Can't wait for our trip. You can watch online past episodes.
