There is a definite season to the lake regions and in October timeframe the ferries go into limited schedule and many places reduce hours or close for off season so exactly when makes a real difference.
I season it is late to find lodging at this point so the usual recommendation of Varenna is probably going to be tough. They might look into someplace like Bellano which is also served by train but not ferry. A larger place like Bellagio - train to Varenna and then ferry - may have more possibilities but the remaining places will probably be pricier. If they aren't limited to using public transportation it opens up smaller and less on the American tourist radar places like the big train served spots.
There is extensive information provided by Rick on the website and in books so I'd recommend a quick dive into some research and then set about trying to find a place at this late date.

Hi there, if you're looking for things to see beyond the usual, I'd recommend Orrido di Bellano, a waterfall in the town of Bellano. Beautiful!
