I will be visiting Lake Como for the 2nd time this coming September. We have 3 days there. Besides the mid-lake attractions (Villa Carlotta, Bellagio, Menaggio, etc.), what other things would you suggest doing/seeing? I will be staying in Varenna. I'm considering a day trip to the town of Como but I've heard mixed things about Como so I don't know whether it's worth a visit or not. Are there any other towns along the lake that would be worthy of a visit? Thanks in advance for your input.
Hi Sheron,
The first time we went to Varenna to meet the RS tour, we took the train directly there from Milan and stayed mid-lake visiting the attactions you mentioned, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The second time, we took the train from Milan to the town of Como and took the boat up to Varenna. We walked from the train station down to the boat dock so didn't see much of Como, but we really enjoyed the boat ride (if I remember right it was about an hour). So that might be an option for you if you are going to Varenna from Milan by train, you could go by way of Como so you could do it one way instead of a day trip. Teri
One of the best things we did on our recent trip to Italy was the cooking class at Il Caminetto. They will pick you up in Varenna. Afterwards, Chef Moreno drove us over to the old castle. We explored that, watched the falconry demonstration, and then followed the hiking trail back down to Varenna. We also rode the ferry over to Menaggio to go sea kayaking, but a group got there ahead of us there were none available. So we went swimming instead. The water was much cleaner there than at Varenna.
spend some time in Como, it is an interesting city and worth a visit
