We currently have 2 days scheduled in Milan & 4 @ Lake Como & have been told that [email protected] is a too long unless you just want to relax (not). We want to go to Switzerland one day & to Lake Maggiore as well.....can we easily get to both from Varenna or should we change to an extra day in Milan?
Not much in Milan really. You could go to Lake Lugano and to Lugano Switzerland or spend an additional day in Switzerland
Susan, One possibility to suggest is to drrop the visit to Milan and spend three days each in Varenna and Stresa (on Lago Maggiore). While you can certainly "relax" in Varenna, you could also take day trips to Bellagio, Menaggio or some of the elegant Villas on the lake. During your time in Stresa, you could tour the Borromeo Islands (especially Isola Bella, which has a large mansion and ornate gardens) and perhaps Mount Mottarone. You could also take a day trip from Stresa to Locarno (Switzerland) via the scenic Cento Valli railway, returning by boat. It makes a nice (albeit long) day trip, and Locarno is a beautiful city. Don't forget to take your Passports! While in Locarno, you could tour Piazza Grande and some of the nice stores (I always enjoy "window shopping" in the Bucherer store, looking at the $10K+ Rolex watches), visit the Madonna del Sasso Monastery or take the Cable Car to Cardada for a fantastic view. There's a restaurant at the top where you can stop for a "cool one" or a nice hot meal, while watching the Paragliders glide past the balcony. Have a look at This Website for a brief description. Both Varenna and Stresa are only about an hour out of Milan, so transportation is very easy. Happy travels!
Thanks for the replies.... still confused....should we keep the four days at L Como
and travel to Switzerland from there as well as to L. Maggiori from L Como or should we stay an extra night in Milan and travel from there to L Maggiori and/or Switzerland?
Susan, I still believe three nights each on Lago di Como and Lago Maggiore would be the best compromise. I'd still skip Milan, as that would likely be a one-night stop, so probably not worth the effort. If you want to include Milan, staying an extra night there and taking a day trip to Lugano is certainly a possibility. It would help to know if there's a particular place that you want to visit in Switzerland? If not, the trip from Stresa to Locarno would certainly cover that. Cheers!
Thanks again, Ken.
We have two days in Milan & we do have tickets to see the Last Supper so we can't eliminate Milan from the itinery. We can add a day for a day trip which would eliminate one day @ L Como but as I said earlier...we want to go to L MAggiori and to Switzerland.....are both accessible from L Como?
Susan, Do you have a preference for where you want to go in Switzerland??? Lago Maggiore is some distance from Lago di Como, so the easiest way to get from one to the other is to go back through Milan. It appears that you have six days total for this portion of your trip? Perhaps you could spend two days in Varenna (Lake Como), one day in Milan (Last Supper) and three days in Stresa (Lake Maggiore, with one day for a side trip to Locarno)?
Ken.....ok.....now I understand that if we want to go to L MAggiori, we should depart from Milan. Prior to Milan, we are spending one night at L. Garda so Milan is actually 1 1/2 day. (the full day had The Last Supper scheduled) We could do a day trip to L MAggiori from Milan (add a day there) & do 3 days in L Como & perhaps go to Switzerland on one of those days. We are heading back to Milan from there for the flight home. Thanks again! Do you think that would work?
