Lake Como or Amalfi Coast

We’re looking to visit Italy in early August with a group of 11+. Looking to rent a villa for a week and we also want to spend 2 days in Rome.

We’ve already visited the Tuscany/Florence area, but are open to other suggestions!

Original plan was Amalfi coast, however I’m concerned it will be very hot in August. Lake Como is likely harder to get to with the goal of also spending time in Rome.

Any suggestions?

Welcome!

Everywhere will be hot and crowded
I think Lake Como might be a bit cooler and certainly easier to get to and move around than the AC

Fly in to Milan - week at Lake Como -train to Rome-fly home from Rome.
Book multi city trip or open jaw

I’d give Rome more than 2 days-to get 2 full days you will need to spend 3 nights
Rome will be especially crowded due to the Jubilee

Also think about any day trips your group will likely want to do from this location & see if that makes a difference.

The Amalfi Coast has several- other coastal villages, sites such as Pompeii, Capri & the Greek temples at Paestum. Lake Como has other lake towns besides the one you choose, Milan, Bergamo, and others about an hour train from Milan, such as Cremona.

My trip to the Amalfi Coast was in late May, and maybe eight years ago. Crowds then were manageable. I cannot imagine how mobbed, and yes, HOT it must be in August. I wouldn’t in a million years. I’m sure Lake Como area (and just about anywhere) will be very busy too, but it feels like you’d at least have some actual breathing room.

Also, even on the best days, getting around the Amalfi Coast takes a lot of time. Not sure how your group dynamics work, but if you’re all just stuck in a Villa on the AC because the road is jammed in both directions then idk how much fun that is.

To see what life is like in Positano, check out the vlogger Nicki Positano (and her very popular husband Carlo) and her friend Elizabeth who runs the Blue Star ferry company.

Short answer, the Amalfi coast in season is like Times Square at Christmas, all day.
