Hi everyone-My family of four are all spending time in different places in Europe and then my husband and I are meeting our two girls in Milan and spending a week in Vareena. We will be in a wonderful airbnb in Vareena for 6 nights. Our girls are 21 and 23 and we're really looking forward to slowing down and just hanging out together and experiencing Lake Como. But I also want to have a lot of ideas in my pocket. Those times when your family looks at you and says what are we doing today mom? and you had planned something the day before but everyone decided to sleep in! We will be there the first week of August because of my daughters study abroad program which would not be our first choice because of crowds but if your daughter asks you to come you go! I've read about all the things everyone reads about. Love to hear your thoughts on some off the beaten track ideas?

There is a castle and old cemetery up above varenna, nice hike

You can hike the Viandante. We did the section to Bellano (see PDF on the website). You can take the train back to Varenna.
Also, we loved our visit by ferry to Villa Balbianello, made famous in part because the Star Wars wedding scene was filmed there. It is dreamy! Make this stop part of a lake tour by boat, stop for lunch somewhere, etc. It can take the better part of a day.
I know what you mean about having back-pocket ideas. Our son always says he doesn't want to be scheduled, then looks at me and asks "What's the plan?"
