Lake Como June Day Trip (young family)

Hello, my family of four (5 and 7 year old boys) plan to spend an entire day around Lake Como in mid June 2023. We are staying approximately 10 miles west of Menaggio (Lake Lugano, Italy). For the day, we would like to have lunch and dinner at Lake Como. We would like to visit Varenna, Bellagio and any other must-see villages.

Do you recommend renting a boat for a few hours to explore Lake Como? I do not have a license, but I use to own a boat. Or would you take Ferries from Menaggio?

We are open to suggestions as we would love to explore various villages, eat local food, enjoy the lake, and other kid-friendly activities (playgrounds, short hikes), etc.

Thanks

You can rent a boat without a boating license in Menaggio. We were going to but then by the time we settled on it there was nothing available. We ended up renting at Lake Garda later in our trip.

We enjoyed it very much but I would not think it would be the best way to visit the towns. I would go by ferry. One day is not really a lot of time. You need to be careful of ferry schedules to make sure you can get back to Menaggio. I would suggest you visit Menaggio last to reduce your risk.

If we did not rent a boat, can we just leave our car in Mnnaggio at the ferry area? Then, we can walk around various villages, via ferry?
Thank you.

There were cars parked by the ferry but am not sure whether it was public parking. Perhaps look up parking in Menaggio.
