Lake Como in the winter

My husband and I are going to Lake Como, Italy in mid-March 2014 for a couple of days. We are wondering what, if any, activities there are since it seems most of the sites I read about are closed at that time. I would be interested to hear from others who have gone at that time of the year, and what activities, restaurants, boat tours, shops, hotels, etc. could be recommended. Thanks.

I went in late March a couple of years ago and the weather cooperated quite nicely! It was sunny and not too cool so we could do anything we wanted to. We stayed at Albergo Milano in Varenna. The location was excellent. We spent time going from town to town via the ferry system. We spent some time wandering around Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio. I don't recall the restaurants that we went to, but they were in Varenna and were very good. One of them is just down the road on the left from Albergo Milano and we excellent. The food at Albergo Milano was pretty good as well! We also took a day trip to Lugano that Egidio set up of r us. he gave us all of the boat/bus/train times and we set off on our own. We started in Varenna, took a ferry across the lake to Menaggio and then a bus to Lugano. After strolling around Lugano (and lunch), we took a train to Como and rode the funicular up to the top for the view. We then took a fast ferry back to Varenna. It was a pretty fun trip.

I've visited Lake Como in the summer and everywhere is rammed full of visitors- not surprisingly, it is a resort area. I think you'll have a much more pleasant time going out of season. Do take something warm to wear though, as it can be very cold.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to share your insights and experiences. You allayed my concerns, Stephen, for having enough to do. I appreciate you sharing your itinerary, which I think we will copy. Grazie!
