We are arriving in Milan in the early afternoon, & taking the train to Lake Como, spending 3 days, & departing from there to Basel the next morning. We would like stay in one of the smaller towns like Veranna or Colico. Is this feasible, or should we be closer to Como to be able to catch a morning train?
Buses are substituting in for trains while track maintenance is being done up through at least September 15, and likely beyond that date. Trains will run from Milan as far north as Lecco. From Lecco north to Varenna, Bellano& Colico, buses will be operating. Train tickets are valid for the buses and can be bought on the Trenord website.
You will need to catch the train to Basel from either Como San Giovanni train station or Milan.
With an early morning train out of Como San Giovanni train station, you might want to stay in beautiful NESSO as it’s only 25 minutes by bus from Como and about one hour by ferry. NESSO also has ferry connections to Bellagio and the other lakeshore towns. You’ll have the village experience without the crowds.
You can stay in Como old town, which is quite beautiful and can either taxi to the Como San Giovanni station or walk it. It’s really close by. Or, you could stay in Colico. It’s what I’d do. Regarding the bus instead of train because of track work to prepare for the Olympics next year, the buses are required and are also required to wait for arriving trains so you’ll have zero issues in that regard if you decide to stay in Varenna or elsewhere.
From Colico it takes 2:20 to reach Como, so I don’t think that works well in catching an early morning train to Basel
