Lake Como Hotel Recommendation

Hi,

I'm heading out to Italy in 3 weeks and need to find a nice hotel that isn't too far from the train station (i.e., we won't have a car).
I'm looking for something nice, clean, quiet but it doesn't have to be high end. I've never been there before so I'm getting confused reading all of the online reviews of the hotels.

My current plan is to arrive in Milan, stay 2 nights, head over to somewhere in the Lake Como area for 2 nights before moving on to Lucerne. Normally I have everything planned by now but things have been chaotic. I'm hoping since the trip is the first week of May it won't be too hard to find hotels. As I mentioned before we will not be using a car so cities/hotels need to be easily access via trains or short taxi rides.

We are just looking for some nice scenery to see and relax for a bit.

On a Rick Steves Tour (the My Way) tour we stayed at the Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna and it was lovely. Has a swimming pool, close walk to the ferries and the train station.

We enjoyed staying at Albergo Milano in Varenna. It's quite popular so I don't know if you'd be able to reserve a room at this late date since you leave in 3 weeks but you might try them. It's a wonderful hotel and our room was very comfortable and clean and we enjoyed an incredible view over Lake Como from our balcony.

If you can't find something in Varenna, the city of Como itself will have lots of choices. You can look at booking.com for all the towns along the lake, but I think varenna and Como are the main plsces with access to trains and ferries. There are also buses that go from town to town along the lake.

We are staying at the Hostel on Lake Como through Hostelling International. The bus at the train station can take you there.
Price is 23 Euros/nite.

We have also stayed at the very charming Albergo Milano in Varenna. The small balconies off the rooms are perfect for enjoying the beautiful lake view while having a a glass of wine. Their restaurant is also very good.
