Lake Como-HELP!

travelling to Lake Como for 4 days in June. I currently have a reservation in Varenna but we want to go to Lake Maggiori & to Switzerland. I understand that it is difficult to do all that from Varenna. With that in mind, where would you stay on Lake Como? Village of Como, Bellagio or Tremezzia or anywhere else? We will not have a car. We also are spending one night in Lake Garda but we could eliminate that part if need be.
Please help!!

Keep your Varenna lodging, it is the best base for Lake Como and to me gorgeous/peaceful in every way. You can get to Switzerland by ferry/bus combo. from Varenna ferry to Menaggio then bus to Lugano Swit.
Como is a deary town just a gd transport hub IMO. Bellagio gd for a meal or walk about.

I would avoid Bellagio, as that is as remote as Varenna. I would choose a more strategic place to stay (good for public transport links etc.) Como itself is good or somewhere which is a main transport link like Argegno - lots of good apartments & villas to rent as well as hotels and only 15 minutes from Como. You coud hop on the ferry to the train station from there. A good rental web site for that area is www.lakecomoproperties.com, where you will also find links for transport etc. or I can send you a list of reccomended hotels, if that helps.

The RS Italy book lays out how to do an all-day Lugano side trip from either Varenna or Bellagio. I've only been to Varenna, but I can vouch for how beautiful and charming it is.

Hello. My husband and I are in our 60's. We stayed five days in Lugano, Switzerland (in 2009) and used it as our base to take day trips to Lake Como and Lake Magiorre. We took the train to get to the boats around both lakes. Lugano is a great place to use as a base.

We stayed a couple of days at the Eremo Gaudio Hotel in Varenna. Highly recommend it. THE best view ever and our room was air conditioned! Dinner on the deck overlooking the sunset across the lake. Check it out on youtube. Just type in FrametoFame and find Two Days in Varenna. We drove south by car from Chur Switzerland and stopped for lunch in St. Moritz. Weather was lousy so we didn't stay long. Trains in Switzerland are fantastic - clean and on time. Should be easy enough to connect via train to Switzerland from Varenna. Also check out the Bernina Express from Triano into Switzerland - one of the premier train rides in the world. Cheers,
Andy
