Lake Como / Dolomites itinerary

Hello! I'm planning a trip in September to Lake Como and the Dolomites with my husband and three year old.

I have 4 nights booked in Lake Como (Menaggio) and 4 nights Ortisei and the last night in Milan prior to our flight home.

I have 2 more nights in between Menaggio and Ortisei that I'm trying to decide where to stay. My thoughts were Verona, Bolzano, or keep going all the way to Ortisei and spend the extra 2 nights there.

I kind of like the idea of a city stay to add something different and to break up the travel. Getting all the way to Ortisei would be a long travel day (we won't have a car so only using trains/buses/taxis). Which place would you recommend to stay between Verona and Bolzano? Or would you recommend to add more days to Ortisei? Thanks!

I’m doing a similar itinerary and — yes— it’s an extremely long day to get from Varenna to Ortisei all in one day by public transit. I would recommend 2 nights in Mantua or Verona following Varenna.

We went from Bellano (one train stop from Varenna) to Verona in 2021 and plan on going from Padua to Ortisei this year.

The journey from Bellano to Verona seemed long to us and we didn’t have a 3 year with us. We did take the regional train from Milan which turned out to be a mistake. We had a group of 7 and I was trying to save money but it turned out to not have a/c. It was 95 degrees that day and everyone had to wear masks in the train. Pure misery.

So I agree that stopping in Verona for a couple nights might be a good option. We liked it a lot.

But most of all I would take a fast train to Verona.
