Hi. We need to get from Milan to Varenna in late June. We only have a couple days on Lake Como so I thought a nice way to see the lake might be a boat tour from Como to Varenna (or Bellagio then taxi over) when we need to head that way anyway (vs train etc). I've tried three places and none of them do this. We'll have four pieces of luggage. I believe there's a public ferry. I haven't found a route or schedule for that that works but I can keep looking - perhaps late June schedules aren't out yet. Plus we wanted a more personal tour that will highlight the different areas/villas/sights. Any advice or tour companies to try would be appreciated. Thank you!
We have taken the ferry with our luggage( carry on) from the city of Como north to Bellagio. I have no idea if you could take four pieces of luggage.
How many people?
Four people. Two adults, two kids but kids are 18 and 20. One carry on size piece of luggage each.
If you are four people, then yes, Take a public ferry from Como north to Bellagio. See BellagioLakeComo.com

It will have schedules for all ferries for specific time periods. Schedule changes throughout the season. Also, the app DreamLake for your phone will be handy as well.
Just back from 4 days staying in Bellagio. No need to pay for a private tour from Como to mid-lakes. Just take the “slow” boat (not the fast hydrofoil type) get a good map of the lake and you will leisurely see everything there is to see and dock at several ports along the way, getting you close to shore for sightseeing. A previous poster linked in the schedule, be careful reading which way the ferry runs (up or down lake, the arrows on the schedule will show you which way) and where that particular boat stops (each boat has dif stops - might get to Varenna or you might need to change at Bellagio or Menaggio).
We took a morning slow boat from Bellagio to Como, spent the day there, then took the fast boat back. We paid €15 per adult, slow ferry was almost empty, fast was packed to standing room. Lots of folks had luggage on the fast boat, likely doing what you are planning to.
We were lucky to have had great weather, it’s a beautiful area. Enjoy!
Thank you, DurJim!!
If you're already in Milan, take the one hour train to Varenna. Once checked in, there's lots of ferries, or you could hire a private boat. Just going to Villa Balbianello , doing the tour, and return is a beautiful day. And exploring Bellagio and the shops and having a meal is also so very pleasant, safe Travels!
Thank you, Pat! (And thank you everyone who's replied.). The problem is we only have one full day at Lake Como. I know, I know it's not enough time! I agree, but there is only so much vacation time and money and we're then headed to Commezzadurra, then Venice. We fly into Milan midday Friday. We'll head to Varenna sometime Sat, we leave Mon for the mountains. So I want to make the most of Sun especially, but also getting from Milan to Varenna Sat. So I was thinking train Milan to Como, slow ferry to Varenna (or Bellagio), that way we get to see that whole part of the lake on the way up. Explore Varenna and dinner there Sat. Then Sunday ferry to Bellagio, possibly tour a villa (Balbianello?). As long as I can pick out sights along the way on the ferry we won't need a private tour. Happy to ferry around mid-lake section Sunday. What do you think? Thanks again!
sounds better. But why carry your luggage around all day Saturday? Can't you go to the hotel and drop your bags, then a short ferry over to Bellagio to explore?
Yes, definitely Nigel. I just didn't want to go all the way back down toward Como. After the initial trip from Milan to Como to Varenna, we'll drop bags off and to stay around the middle of the lake.
May I ask why you seem stuck on going to Como town? The Middle Lakes area is much prettier, IMHO. Safe travels!
Sorry, I don't think I'm being clear. It's not Como specifically we want to see, it's the lake and sights in between Como and Varenna. We only have one full day at Lake Como. I don't want to spend that day traveling all the way back south to see the villas along the way, but I do want to see them. So if we take a leisurely trip via ferry then we'll have seen a lot of the lake by boat, and can spend our one full day probably walking around Bellagio. The rest of the time we'll explore Varenna and the other towns in the center of the lake; perhaps tour Balbianello or another villa. We can spend that full day doing a private boat tour, but it's much more expensive than the ferry, and again, we will have already had an opportunity to travel north via the ferry. Does that make sense? I'm trying to accomplish two things at the same time: get from Milan to Varenna, and enjoy sights on the lake along the way. I suppose there's something to be said for getting to our hotel more quickly and dropping off bags, but I do want to explore as much of the lake as we have time for and a ferry up the lake sounds nice. I'll just have to educate myself on what we're seeing since we won't have a tour guide! Open to suggestions.
The most scenic part of Lake Como is mid lake.
The middle Lakes areas are the Crown Jewels of Lake Como, in my opinion. And the Como town area isn't as scenic.
In your short time, exploring Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio , and a Villa ( Balbianello) will fill your time. The ferries aren't super speedy.
We like hotel du Lac in Varenna, ask for a lake view room with a balcony. The Middle Lakes areas are so beautiful, that just sitting on a patio and soaking in the view is pretty great experience.
You are late to be booking accommodations for June, so that may influence your itinerary.
As you can tell, I'm trying to get you to drop Como town, and spend your short time enjoying the beauty of the Middle Lakes.
Enjoy either way !
Thank you, Pat. Was hoping to cruise by George Clooney's house but maybe I have to drop that. :) We have reservations at Hotel Olivedo in Varenna. Can't wait. Grazie!
