As to your question, where did you read that?

We were in Lake Como in mid-Sept '09 & everything was open. I know that much of Lake Como closes up in the winter but in late Sept & early Oct, I believe everything will still be open. I don't think it starts to close down until late Nov/early Dec.

That's not true. (Meaning your original information that most of the restaurants will be closed.)

I've been in Varenna - Menaggio - Bellagio (the Mid-Lake area) in the last half of September and everything was still open.
