Looking to stay in Lake Como, Stresa/Tremezzo area. On the lakes. 4 star, approx. $250US a nite/ private baths/air cond. End of Sept.Maybe B&B. We have stayed in The Barchetta previously and loved the view.Any input on local sites would be great also. Just looking for something different this time before heading up to Switzerland.
I just returned from Italy and spend 2 nights at the Albergo Milano in Varenna just at your price point. The hotel and views from our room were amazing. The food at their restuarnant La Vista was just as good.
Joan, Are you planning to spend time on both Lago di Como and Lago Maggiore? Stresa is located on Lago Maggiore. It would help if you could indicate which part of Lago di Como you'd prefer. The mid-lake area and the town of Varenna are the most popular with many here. If you'd like to stay in or near Varenna, you could look at Royal Hotel Victoria, Albergo Milano or Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio (you may have to increase your budget a bit for Villa Serbelloni). Happy travels!
I stayed at the Royal Victoria in Varenna and it is a very elegant old hotel. Right on the lake with beautiful views and a swimming pool.
I would recommend it.
Don't get too fixated on the number of stars for a hotel. The star system in Italy is different and just refers to certain amenities provided, such as parking, elevator, 24 hr front desk, etc. Some 2 or 3 star hotels are actually more luxurious than some 4 stars.
Joan, We stayed at Borgo le Terazze outside of Bellagio this summer and will stay here when we return to lake Como. It's simply breathtaking

Another vote for Albergo Milano in Varenna. We loved our stay there; we had a room with a lakefront view and waking up every morning to the view of the lake was magical. If you are interested in Albergo Milano, you need to book pretty far in advance as they book up fast. I would contact them now for next September.
I agree with Sheron and Robert, Albergo Milano in Varenna. Ask for one of the two rooms with the Lake view with the large patio attached to room.
You don't mention how you will be travelling, but if it's by train, then you may want to consider lodgings in Varenna. It is a charming town conveniently located on the train line from Florence (via Milan/via Como) so it's very easy to get to if you are coming from the south. We stayed in Varenna two nights before taking the same rail line on to Tirano where we caught the Bernina Express train into Switzerland. Again, you don't say where you are going in Switzerland, but we stayed in Chur, then went to Zurich.
We, unfortunately, had a poor experience with the Hotel Olivedo in Varenna and I wouldn't recommend staying there (in fact, I would strongly recommend staying away:). However, we saw two other hotels in Varenna which may be of interest: Hotel du Lac and Villa Capressi.
Varenna is dreamy. I have been to Lake Como in October years ago, and then this past August. I am sure your late September trip will provide you with beautiful vistas as well as beautiful memories.
Happy and safe travels!
We stayed at Hotel du Lac in Varenna for three nights in early October. Lovely place right on the lake, a five minute walk to the ferries. Would have no problem recommending it!!
